State Senator Louis Blessing | The Ohio Senate
Senator Louis W. Blessing, III has introduced Senate Bill 185 in an effort to address the issue of vicious dog attacks in Ohio. The bill proposes changes to the existing laws that define what constitutes a vicious dog and aims to increase penalties for owners whose dogs are involved in attacks.
"Protecting Ohioans from vicious dog attacks starts by making sure owners are held accountable," stated Senator Blessing. He further emphasized that "by increasing penalties, this bill discourages poor dog ownership and will help in preventing a life-altering tragedy from taking place. I'm proud to introduce legislation that will assist law enforcement in handling these horrendous attacks."
The proposed legislation includes a provision that elevates the offense to a third-degree felony if an owner negligently fails to prevent their dog from committing an act classified as vicious. Additionally, it mandates that courts order the humane destruction of any dog that seriously injures or kills a person.
Senate Bill 185 is currently under review by the Senate Judiciary Committee, where it will undergo further hearings.
