The Ohio Senate has passed House Bill 496, introducing several updates to the state's county auditor law. The bill, supported by Senator Louis W. Blessing, III of Colerain Township, aims to enhance the efficiency of county auditors in serving the public.
"This legislation helps our county auditors execute their jobs efficiently while best serving the public," stated Blessing, who chairs the Senate Ways and Means Committee.
Key changes proposed by House Bill 496 include requiring county auditors to provide more precise estimates for proposed property tax levies. Estimates will now be rounded to the nearest dollar instead of the nearest $1,000. Additionally, the bill adjusts deadlines for property tax complaints and streamlines notification processes for tax-exempt properties.
Another significant provision included in the legislation prevents property transfers from foreclosure sales if buyers have outstanding delinquent property taxes elsewhere in Ohio.
"We must ensure every Ohioan is up-to-date on their taxes before investing in other properties," Blessing emphasized. "This simple change will hold property owners accountable and help our communities thrive."
