Navigating a Hamilton winter

It's that time of year where winter weather comes to Hamilton. Did you know the City of Hamilton normally carries more than 2,000 tons of salt each year regardless of weather conditions? That means we're prepared for any anticipated snow.

Hamilton has 17 snow plows ready to hit the roads to get them treated during snowfall. You can stay in the know on live road conditions with Hamilton's Snow Informer.

To help out our crew members, please check out these snow tips from our infrastructure team:

  • When clearing driveways place snow on the downstream side of driveway to prevent our plows from pushing the snow back onto the driveway.
  • When digging a car out that is parked on the street, place snow on the curb, not in the street.
  • Park cars in driveways, if possible.
  • Do not park in cul-de-sacs or dead ends, plows have limited options of where the snow can be placed in these areas.
  • Do not attempt to pass a snow plow, it's dangerous for you and the plow driver.
  • Limit trips around town while it is actively snowing and plowing operations are in progress.
  • If you do have to go out, be patient and give yourself plenty of extra time to make your destination.
  • There are Primary streets in each neighborhood that get 1st priority, once those are able to be cleared, then the drivers will move to the Secondary streets (side streets) to make those streets passable.
  • We do not plow or salt alleys.
  • Please remove any obstructions from the right of way such as portable basketball goals and could be damaged or cause damage to the City's plow trucks.
City of Hamilton's Health Department has also provided tips and tricks for staying warm and safe during winter months. You can view those here
