State Rep. Cindy Abrams (R-Harrison) has introduced legislation aimed at creating a permanent funding source for training Ohio's law enforcement officers. The bill comes on the heels of Abrams' successful push for an $80 million investment over the next two years in the Law Enforcement Assistance Fund, which will be used to support ongoing professional training for law enforcement personnel.
To ensure that funding for law enforcement training remains sustainable for years to come, Abrams' legislation proposes using a portion of the anticipated tax revenue from the sale of adult-use marijuana, which was approved by Ohio voters just last week. By allocating a portion of these tax revenues, Abrams aims to provide a consistent and reliable funding stream for law enforcement training programs.
"Training saves lives," stated Abrams. "Every one of our law enforcement officers should have access to quality training, and this bill will ensure that this becomes Ohio's reality with sustainable funding. Proper training sets law enforcement up for success, increases public safety, and strengthens community relations."
The introduction of this legislation marks a significant step forward in addressing the need for ongoing training and professional development within Ohio's law enforcement community. By establishing a dedicated funding source, the bill seeks to provide law enforcement officers with the necessary resources to enhance their skills and stay up-to-date with the latest techniques and best practices in their field.
The bill is currently awaiting a bill number and committee assignment before it can proceed further in the legislative process.
