Stay safe by staying informed

The Madeira Police Department would like to help you stay safe by staying informed. With today being Fall Walk To School Day we thought a reminder about how the HAWK Signal works would be helpful.

Pedestrians often find it necessary to cross Miami Avenue when grabbing a bite to eat, shopping, or just out for a stroll. This is most certainly true when students are on their way to or from school. Some time ago the City of Madeira installed a hybrid traffic signal called the HAWK (High-intensity Activated Crosswalk) near the intersection of Miami Avenue and Railroad Avenue. Officers are often asked by both pedestrians and motorists, what exactly they are supposed to do when the HAWK is activated. Here is a graphic that should help explain what to do for both pedestrians and motorists when the HAWK Signal is activated.
