Ohio Senate exempts East Palestine disaster relief from state taxes

Today, the Ohio Senate approved legislation designed to protect disaster relief payments for residents affected by the East Palestine train derailment. Senate Bill 9, introduced by Senator Louis Blessing III, ensures these payments are exempt from state income taxes.

Senator Blessing emphasized the importance of this measure: “Without this important tax conformity bill the federal disaster assistance would be subject to income taxes.” He added that not adjusting the tax law could lead to “unintended consequences” that would be detrimental and unjust to those impacted by the incident. “It’s simply the right thing to do,” he stated.

The train derailment in East Palestine occurred over two years ago, prompting new safety standards for commercial trains through efforts led by the Senate’s Select Committee on Rail Safety.
