National Cancer Prevention Month

February is National Cancer Prevention Month.  Early detection through routine screenings can prevent or severely limit the impacts of several types of cancer.  Recommendations from the American Cancer Society include:

• Routinely self-screen your skin
o Follow up with a dermatologist about skin concerns

• Get a colonoscopy at age 50 and every ten years after.  
o Those at higher risk due to genetics and family history may need more frequent testing.
• Schedule a mammogram; women over age 40 and every two years after
o Those at higher risk due to genetics and family history may need more frequent testing.
• Schedule pap smears; women over age 21 and every three years after
